Somerset Staffie Rescue was formed in January 2009 to try to help unwanted Staffies find new forever homes.
Up and down the country dozens of unwanted Staffordshire Bull Terriers are put to sleep every week due to lack of human love. Many of them find themselves in the pound, where they have 7 days to be claimed by their owner. If ,after this time no one has claimed them then their days are numbered and their wait on Death Row starts. Some find rescue spaces. Many of them do not, due to the bad reputation of the breed vehiculed by the media and due to the sheer volume of other dogs seeking rescue spaces.
Our mission at Somerset Staffies is to help reduce the number of staffies that find themselves in this situation. We are a small, home run rescue, our space is sadly limited, we can't change the world, but have been able to change the world of 12 dogs since our creation 6 months ago, providing them with veterinary care, shelter, training and the human warmth they were lacking in until they were able to find forever homes.
Our work is purely voluntary, and we rely on donations from the public in order to carry on helping as many dogs as we can.
All of our dogs for rehoming are fully assessed in a home environment with both children and other dogs. They are fully vaccinated, treated against worms and fleas and are neutered where possible.
We rehome UK wide, every potential adopter is homechecked to ensure that the right dog goes to the right person and family situation. We rehome to families with children as long as we consider the dog to be suited to the home, and that the potential adopters undertake to teach their children safe behaviour around dogs.
Somerset Staffies is run by Sam and her team of volunteers. Sam has owned dogs all her life and fostered Staffies for other rescues before founding her own in memory of her beloved dog, Chi, a very special Staffie, who passed away in January 2009 and who will never be forgotten.
